Movies Streaming/On Demand This Week: ‘The Bourne Legacy’ & More

bourne-legacy-250This week, you can see if Jeremy Renner is a worthy Matt Damon replacement in the “Bourne” franchise as “The Bourne Legacy” is available through streaming and On Demand. If you’re more into grumpy old men sitting around and watching baseball with Justin Timberlake, then there’s “Trouble with the Curve.” And as this is the year of celebrating the prolific acting of Matthew McConaughey, be sure to check out “Killer Joe,” which its one of his most disturbing roles yet (and that’s saying a lot).

Documentary fans we have two good ones: Frederick Weisman’s “Crazy Horse,” which looks at the famous Paris club and Ken Burns’ “The Central Park Five,” that examines the horrific 1989 case.

‘The Bourne Legacy’
With Matt Damon stepping down from his Bourne duties (for the moment, at least) the baton has been passed to Jeremy Renner. Like Jason Bourne, Renner’s Aaron Cross is searching for for answers as to why he is who he is.

Why Watch It: Yes, Renner didn’t get much action as Hawkeye in “The Avengers,” but he makes up for it in this one, proving he’s worthy of just about any action franchise.
Available On: iTunes, Cable On Demand, VUDU, Amazon Instant

Trouble With the Curve‘Trouble with the Curve’
One of the rare times recently that Clint Eastwood took a role in a film he didn’t direct (though the director, Robert Lorenz, is Clint’s longtime 1st AD and producer). He plays an aging baseball scout whose eyesight is failing so he brings his daughter (Amy Adams) on the road to help evaluate his late prospect.

Why Watch It: Mixture of old school vs. new school methods and a Justin Timberlake/Amy Adams love story sidebar, there’s something here for everyone.

Available On: iTunes, VUDU, Amazon Instant (On Demand: 12/18)

‘Premium Rush’
In the midst of a banner year for Joseph Gordon-Levitt that included starring in the mind-bending “Looper” and mega-blockbuster “The Dark Knight Rises,” he also got his first real starring vehicle in this cat and mouse thriller. Levitt plays a Manhattan bike messenger who winds up on the run after picking up an envelope.

Why Watch It: Might not be an original story, but the chases through the streets of NYC are pretty thrilling.
Available On: iTunes, VUDU (On Demand: (12/21)
Killer Joe
‘Killer Joe’
In the year of McConaughey, this deep fried stage adaptation was perhaps his most chilling performance. Starring as Texas cop/contract killer, Killer Joe Cooper, he turns his attention to a young girl (Juno Temple) when the family who hires him can’t pay for his services.
Why Watch It: With a mixture of comedy and violence, it’s one of director William Friedkin’s better movies in recent memory.
Available On: iTunes, VUDU, Amazon Instant (On Demand: 12/21)

‘Crazy Horse’
Legendary documentary filmmaker Frederick Weisman has pointed his lens to almost everything on the planet, from the boxing ring, to the ballet, the zoo and high school (which he did twice). But for his latest, the master of vérité looks at the legendary Crazy Horse club in Paris.
Why Watch It: If you’re not headed to Paris anytime soon, this is a good way to capture some of the city’s beautiful, um, culture.
Available On: iTunes, Cable On Demand

‘The Central Park Five’
Another legend in the doc world, Ken Burns, teams with his daughter Sarah for this examination into the 1989 case of five black and Latino teens who were wrongfully convicted of raping a white woman in Central Park. Speaking to the Central Park Five, investigators, and jurors in the case the Burns (along with co-director David McMahon) piece together an incident that threw fire on an already divided city.
Watch It: Incredible investigative work and a look at a time when New York was considered one of the most dangerous cities in the country.
Available On: Cable On Demand

Sexy Beast‘Sexy Beast’
This look into the British underworld follows Gary Dove (Ray Winstone) who is forced out of retirement by the crazed Don Logan (Ben Kingsley) for one last score, thus putting director Jonathan Glazer on the list of hot directors and earning Kingsley an Oscar nomination for his performance.
Available On: iTunes, Netflix, VUDU, Amazon Instant

‘Weird Science’
If you’re looking for some good old fashioned fun then nothing tops this ‘80s classic by John Hughes. Anthony Michael Hall and Ilan Mitchell-Smith play social outcasts who use their geek know-how to create the perfect woman. And do they ever. Kelly LeBrock doesn’t only have the looks of a goddess but she can act too.
Available On: Hulu (free)
